Scrimmages in Shanghai

28 Aug
Space to shoot a few hoops in downtown Shanghai

Even after after living in this city for nearly four years, I continue to find new places.  This set of basketball courts is at the intersection of two of the major roads in Shanghai – Xizang Road and Huaihai Road.  Hidden behind a fence flanked by green bushes, it is actually the outside playground area for one of the local high schools, but on weekends anyone can come and play for 5RMB.

We’ve learned to call ahead to see if the courts are open – sometimes there are events, bad weather can cause them to close, but most of the time they are ready and easy to use.   The only strange thing is that after playing basketball for an hour I’m typically dripping wet with sweat and guzzling water – where the rest of the pedestrians are shopping for computers, buying clothes at Max Mara or hitting up one of the restaurants nearby.  It’s a small price to pay for the ability to exercise outside – I’m practically a local now anyway!

Where’s the strangest place you’ve exercised?
Enjoying now
