Star power

1 Sep

In July I posted an entry about my piano and included a very lovely traditional song (see “My Piano”).  That however is only one side of the music industry here.  Pop rules and there are few stars as transcendent as Jay Zhou (or Zhou Jie Lun or Jay Chou).  He is one of my favorite Chinese singers who has also done some acting and has crossed over to the western media as well – most recently he was the sidekick in the Green Hornet movie.

He has done producing, directing and countless advertisements – it is hard not to go to the supermarket or even walk to work without finding some product with his name or picture plastered on.   Living here it is not hard to identify he is a star.

When I was teaching English a few years ago his recent hit was showing on all the subways – something like “The Cowboys are very Busy.”  The video had a large chinese cast dressed up in western gear, line dancing and drinking milk in a type of saloon.  I fear this may have caused a whole new generation of Chinese kids to repicture the american west.

The song is impossibly fast and I’m still not really sure what they are saying in it, but it was a big hit!  I’ve attached a link to the video below.  This is a Chinese site and there is an ad that will play first but if you bear with it, it’s pretty funny.  I’d love to hear comments on it.

In addition to the link (which I’m not sure will actually work) I have chosen to post a song that was used in a huge historical drama here which talks about a special vase that survived throughout time.  It is the complete opposite of the video.  I hope you enjoy.

Guess Willie and Waylan will come next in response to the video and they will be singing: “Momma, don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys!”

Another reason why the video is misleading to Chinese audiences!
